The German speaking Women's Association
Back in April 1999 the German speaking Women's Association had its first official meeting. The club was borne out of the desire and initiative of a small group of German speaking women, who having arrived in Dubai, felt the need for a platform to share their lives and interests in a constructive and positive manner.
Our membership fluctuates as women come and go in this transient society, however, our current membership is approximately 250. It can be said with a degree of pride that the German speaking Women's Association has been a great success for German speakers of more than 15 different nationalities.
The committee works hard and with dedication at organising regular monthly meetings, and presenting numerous interesting speakers varying from medical to historical topics. In order to keep the members busy and challenged throughout the month, committee members send out monthly newsletters, plan great excursions, culinary demonstrations, field trips and charity fund raising events.
During the last three years the German speaking Women's Association visited the Jebel Ali Free Zone, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory and the Camel and Horse Race Track, Media City, archeological digs in Ras Al Khaimah, agricultural farms in Dhaid, Sharjah Museums and new hotels to name only some of the places we enjoyed.
In addition, a variety of "interest groups" have formed within the membership to cater for individual needs and talents, such as Internet and computer classes, meetings for Moms & Kids, investment & stock market analysis, English conversation, gardening in Dubai and workshops for those with interest in handicrafts etc.
Our meetings are held every first Sunday of the month at the Magnolia Restaurant - Al Qasr at 9.30 a.m. If you speak German and feel inclined to join us, we look forward to welcoming you at our next meeting. Our last meeting before the yearly summer break will be the first Sunday in June, and we start again on the first Sunday in October. The monthly breakfast meetings are at a cost of DHS 95 per person (buffet, coffee and softdrinks) plus DHS 20 only for non-members.
